Episode 4, titled “Flight Attendant of the Dead,” is one of the most emotional episodes in Zom 100. While it starts with comedy and lighthearted adventures, it gradually becomes a touching story about dreams, hope, and the uncertainty of life during a zombie apocalypse. The episode adapts Chapters 4–5 of the manga.
Beginning of the Episode
The episode opens with Akira Tendou and his best friend Kencho enjoying life on the rooftop of their temporary shelter.
Instead of constantly worrying about zombies, they:
- Cook delicious food.
- Play video games.
- Laugh together.
- Enjoy the freedom they never had before.
For Akira, the zombie apocalypse has strangely become an opportunity to truly live. Before the outbreak, his exhausting office job left him physically and emotionally drained. Now, despite the danger, he feels happier than ever.
Kencho Reads Akira’s Bucket List
While Akira is distracted, Kencho secretly looks at his famous Bucket List.
The list contains dreams Akira wants to complete before he dies or becomes a zombie.
Kencho laughs at some of the items but is inspired by Akira’s positive outlook. Instead of making his own separate list, he tells Akira they should achieve their dreams together.
This moment strengthens their friendship and shows that both men have finally escaped lives they hated.
Buying a Giant Television
One item on Akira’s bucket list is to:
“Watch movies and play games on a giant widescreen TV.”
The two friends travel to Ikebukuro in search of a huge television.
Even though zombies are everywhere, Akira refuses to give up on simple pleasures.
This is one of the central messages of the anime:
Life isn’t only about surviving.
It’s about enjoying the moments you still have.
Kencho Reveals His Dream
During their trip, Kencho shares something he had hidden for years.
His real dream isn’t business or making money.
He wants to become a stand-up comedian.
His family forced him into a career he never loved.
Just like Akira, he spent years living according to other people’s expectations.
The zombie apocalypse gave him the courage to admit what truly makes him happy.
A Dangerous Encounter
On the way to the electronics store, a zombie-controlled truck nearly crashes into them.
Akira and Kencho barely escape and race through zombie-filled streets before taking refuge in the basement of a department store.
The action scenes mix suspense with humor, a signature style of the series.
Meeting the Flight Attendants
Inside the underground shopping mall, they meet three survivors:
- Yukari
- Reika
- Maki
All three are professional flight attendants.
For Akira, one bucket-list dream was to spend time with flight attendants, and he jokingly realizes this wish has unexpectedly come true.
A Night of Happiness
The group shares food, drinks, and conversations.
For a brief moment, everyone forgets the zombie apocalypse.
There is:
- laughter,
- teasing,
- jokes,
- and hope.
This scene reminds viewers that happiness can exist even in terrible situations.
Akira especially enjoys seeing everyone smile.
Akira Tries to Impress Yukari
Akira is shy but wants to make Yukari laugh.
He performs a silly stunt by drinking tequila in an exaggerated way.
Everyone laughs together.
Although the moment is funny, it also shows Akira’s kindness.
He doesn’t want to impress people through strength or wealth.
He simply wants others to smile.
Yukari’s Dream
As the night continues, Yukari speaks about her profession.
She loved being a flight attendant.
Her dream was to:
- travel the world,
- meet different people,
- and make passengers happy.
Even during the apocalypse, she remains proud of her career.
Unlike many survivors who have lost hope, Yukari still values the life she lived.
The Tragic Twist
Unfortunately, the peaceful gathering doesn’t last.
The group discovers that zombies have entered the mall.
Several survivors are attacked.
Yukari is bitten.
Instead of panicking, she calmly accepts her fate.
She asks Akira not to waste his life trying to save someone who cannot be saved.
This heartbreaking scene contrasts sharply with the earlier comedy and highlights the emotional weight of the series.
Akira Learns an Important Lesson
Watching Yukari face death without regret deeply affects Akira.
He realizes that every person carries dreams they hope to fulfill.
Some succeed.
Some never get the chance.
This inspires him to add another goal to his bucket list:
Remember what I wanted to become when I was a child.
This new goal marks a turning point in his character, as he begins searching not just for fun experiences but for his true purpose in life.
Symbolism in Episode 4
This episode uses the zombie apocalypse as a metaphor for real life.
The zombies represent people who:
- have stopped dreaming,
- only follow routines,
- and live without purpose.
Akira, Kencho, and Yukari show the opposite:
- they choose hope,
- they chase dreams,
- and they refuse to let fear define them.
The episode suggests that living with purpose is more important than simply staying alive.
Animation and Music
BUG FILMS continues to deliver:
- colorful zombie action,
- expressive character animation,
- vibrant city backgrounds,
- and energetic music that shifts naturally between comedy and tragedy.
The contrast between cheerful scenes and emotional moments makes the episode especially memorable.
