Episode Overview

Episode 3 shifts the focus from Akira enjoying his freedom during the zombie apocalypse to showing the importance of friendship. Although zombies remain a constant danger, the emotional core of the episode is Akira’s determination to rescue the one friend who always believed in him.

Akira Tries to Enjoy His Freedom

The episode begins with Akira continuing his bucket list.

One funny goal is:

• Growing a cool beard.

He quickly realizes that a beard doesn’t suit him, so he crosses it off with a laugh. This lighthearted moment reminds viewers that Akira is finally living life on his own terms instead of following society’s expectations.

Internet Finally Works Again

Suddenly, Wi-Fi and phone service return.

Akira receives years’ worth of unread messages because he had spent three exhausting years trapped in an exploitative company, leaving almost no time for friends or family.

While checking his messages, he notices one name:

Kencho.

Immediately, memories from college come rushing back.

Who Is Kencho?

Kenichiro Ryuzaki (Kencho) is Akira’s best friend from college.

During university:

• He was energetic.
• He loved parties.
• He constantly made people laugh.
• He dreamed of becoming a comedian.

After graduation, Kencho became a successful real-estate salesman.

From the outside, it looked like he had achieved everything.

Akira secretly became jealous because his own life had become miserable.

Kencho Is Trapped

Akira calls Kencho.

To his surprise, Kencho answers.

However, Kencho is trapped inside a nightclub in Shinjuku, surrounded by zombies.

He tells Akira:

“Don’t come.”

But Akira ignores the warning.

He decides that rescuing his best friend is more important than protecting himself.

Flashbacks Reveal Their Friendship

While driving toward Shinjuku, Akira remembers college.

Kencho always encouraged him:

• Quit your terrible job.
• Don’t waste your life.
• Follow your dreams.

At the time, Akira never listened because he believed success meant enduring endless suffering.

Now he realizes Kencho had been right all along.

The Rescue Mission

Inside the nightclub, survivors are desperately trying to stay alive.

Meanwhile, zombies break through the defenses.

Akira reaches the building just as Kencho escapes from a locked room.

The reunion is emotional.

Instead of acting cool, Akira bursts into tears.

He apologizes for ignoring Kencho’s advice and admits he had envied his friend’s seemingly perfect life.

The Rooftop Escape

Soon, dozens of zombies surround them.

The two friends race to the rooftop.

Unfortunately, they become trapped.

The only escape is a dangerous jump to a neighboring building.

Akira jumps first.

Kencho hesitates.

At that moment, he reveals a shocking truth.

Kencho’s Secret

Although Kencho looked successful, he wasn’t happy.

He confesses:

• He hated his corporate job.
• He only pretended to enjoy his lifestyle.
• His real dream was to become a stand-up comedian.

This scene teaches an important lesson:

Just because someone appears successful doesn’t mean they are living their dream.

Many people wear masks to satisfy society.

Akira encourages Kencho to stop pretending and chase his real ambition.

Kencho Takes the Leap

Inspired by Akira’s words, Kencho makes the jump.

He barely reaches the other building.

During the jump, his clothes are torn away, creating one of the funniest moments of the episode.

The humor perfectly balances the intense action.

Friendship Restored

Later that night, the two friends relax on a rooftop.

For the first time in years:

• They laugh together.
• They share their dreams.
• They feel truly free.

Kencho officially joins Akira’s adventure.

Instead of merely surviving the zombie apocalypse, they decide to enjoy every day while chasing their dreams.

Main Themes

1. True Friendship

Real friends tell you the truth—even when it’s difficult to hear.

Kencho never wanted Akira to suffer.

Akira finally understands that.

2. Freedom

Ironically, the zombie apocalypse gives both men the courage to abandon lives they hated.

Instead of fearing death every day at work, they now choose to truly live.

3. Don’t Judge by Appearances

Akira envied Kencho’s expensive lifestyle.

But Kencho envied people who had the courage to follow their dreams.

The episode reminds us that appearances can be deceiving.

4. Taking Risks

The rooftop jump symbolizes more than escaping zombies.

It represents taking a leap toward the life you really want.
