Episode 6 marks a major turning point in the story. While the previous episodes focused on enjoying freedom during the zombie apocalypse, this episode explores Akira’s past trauma and shows that emotional scars can be harder to escape than zombies.

Beginning of the Episode

After surviving several dangerous adventures in Tokyo, Akira Tendou and Kencho notice that modern life is collapsing even further.

• Electricity begins failing.
• Water becomes scarce.
• Communication networks stop working.

Instead of panicking, Akira looks at the beautiful night sky. Since Tokyo’s lights have disappeared, the stars are brighter than ever. The sight reminds him of his childhood in Gunma Prefecture, where his parents still live.

Akira Decides to Visit Home

Akira suddenly realizes he has no idea whether his parents are still alive.

Kencho encourages him to go home before it is too late.

This becomes another important goal on Akira’s bucket list:

Visit his parents.

The journey is long, so they decide an RV (recreational vehicle/camper van) would make traveling safer and more comfortable during the zombie apocalypse.

Meeting Shizuka Again

While searching for an RV at a dealership, Akira and Kencho unexpectedly meet Shizuka Mikazuki again.

Unlike Akira, Shizuka believes survival depends on careful planning.

Akira wants everyone to travel together because:

• They can protect each other.
• They can share supplies.
• Traveling together is less dangerous.

Although Shizuka usually prefers being alone, she begins to realize that having trustworthy companions may improve her chances of survival.

This slowly strengthens the friendship between the three characters.

A Familiar Face Appears

Everything changes when Akira encounters someone from his previous office:

Gonzou Kosugi

Kosugi was Akira’s former supervisor.

Before the zombie apocalypse, he constantly:

• overworked employees,
• manipulated people,
• insulted workers,
• exploited everyone’s kindness.

He represents the toxic corporate culture that ruined Akira’s life.

When Kosugi sees Akira alive, he pretends to welcome him warmly.

He offers:

• food,
• shelter,
• fuel,
• vehicle repairs,
• and supplies.

At first, it seems like a generous offer.

The Trap

Kosugi’s kindness is fake.

He tells Akira:

“You can stay here, but you must work for me.”

Instead of asking politely, Kosugi uses fear of zombies to pressure everyone into obeying him.

Even though civilization has collapsed, Kosugi has recreated the same exploitative workplace that existed before the apocalypse.

Akira Falls Back into Old Habits

This is the most important psychological part of the episode.

Although Akira is free from his old company, simply seeing Kosugi causes him to become frightened.

He immediately starts acting like his old office self:

• apologizing constantly,
• working without complaint,
• suppressing his own feelings,
• obeying every order.

The episode shows how trauma doesn’t disappear overnight.

Even after escaping his terrible job, Akira’s fear of authority still controls him.

Shizuka Notices the Problem

Shizuka watches Akira carefully.

She cannot understand why someone who had become cheerful and confident suddenly transforms into an exhausted office worker again.

She realizes that Kosugi has deeply damaged Akira’s confidence.

This helps Shizuka understand Akira’s past much better.

Life at the Truck Stop

Kosugi controls everyone living at the truck stop.

He forces survivors to work continuously while using zombies almost like tools to maintain his operation.

The survivors have enough food and shelter, but they have lost their freedom.

This creates an important contrast:

• Outside the truck stop are dangerous zombies.
• Inside the truck stop are controlling humans.

The episode suggests that people can sometimes be more dangerous than monsters.

Symbolism

Episode 6 uses zombies as more than just monsters.

They symbolize:

• endless corporate work,
• loss of freedom,
• emotional exhaustion,
• and people living without dreams.

Kosugi becomes a symbol of exploitation. Even during the apocalypse, he cannot stop treating people like disposable employees.

Character Development

Akira Tendou

Akira finally confronts the emotional wounds left by his previous job. His greatest enemy is no longer the zombies—it’s the fear and helplessness instilled by his abusive boss.

Shizuka Mikazuki

Shizuka becomes more compassionate. She begins to see that survival isn’t only about intelligence and planning; emotional support also matters.

Kencho

Kencho continues to encourage Akira and serves as comic relief, but he also recognizes how deeply Akira has been affected by his past.

Gonzou Kosugi

Kosugi is introduced as one of the series’ most detestable human antagonists. He demonstrates that selfishness and manipulation can persist even after society collapses.
